Around the Family Table: The Putnam Table

My friend Whitney, actually she's my sister really because we do life together like family, inspires me with her every move.  Whitney is founder of the non-profit women's ministry Imperfectly Brave and somehow she finds time to gather with her two blondes and red headed husband almost nightly. Though is isn't easy with busy schedules, serving as a family in ministry and keeping two preschoolers in their chairs; all making this a balancing act of great proportions. Hear why Whitney believes the family table is necessary and beneficial:As a little girl, I can't remember not sitting around a table. That means we sat at a table in a little town called Pleasant Hill just outside of San Francisco. It means we sat around a table in Boca Raton, Florida. And finally we sat around a table in the home that built me --- in San Antonio, Texas. My mom, a celebrator, taught me how to celebrate through food. And I am eternally grateful she did. Food is the great equalizer. We all need it. Most of us deeply enjoy it. And it causes us to linger, appreciating every bite.

Because of her, I enjoy celebrating around a table, too. And one of my favorite ways to celebrate is through mexican food. It's those good San Antonio roots inside of me. I serve this picadillo recipe often when we are having company -- but even if we don't --- my family LOVES the leftovers. One of the best parts is the many ways to enjoy this meal. I usually eat the meat over lettuce with loads of salsa on top while my husband gets himself (one, two or three!) tortillas and chows down.
And I keep the rest super simple. Canned refried beans and mexican rice in a box. Salsa, sour cream and cheese. Down and down! Your family will love you! So will your company! Celebrate well, new friends!
